General Info

The St. Catharines Cycling Club runs a "Youth Mountain Bike club". This club is open to cyclists between the ages of 12-16 years old (male and female). Throughout the season we meet each Monday for trail rides. Many members participate in local races throughout the summer, Lake-to-Lake Classic, Ontario Cup events, Squeezer etc.

What are the fees?

The fees are the same for the Youth MTB as they are for every club member. If you are not a OCA/CCA/UCI registered racer, count on the fees being $60.00. There are discounts for family memberships. Click on "Club Info" to download the forms.

When is registration?

You can register at any time by mailing in your forms. This would be best. If you would like to bring your form to our first Monday night ride, we will accept them then too. Our first ride this year will be Monday, May 5th, 2008. Our rides start at 6:00pm, but we will have someone there at 5:30pm to accept registrations as well.

What does registration include?

Your registration includes all the benefits of being a SCCC member, including discounts at local bike shops, access to club clothing and the ability to participate in all club rides and races. Specifically as a Youth MTB member you get an organized MTB ride each Monday that is separated based on ability. As well each ride is led by one of our NCCP qualified MTB coaches.

When does the season start?

In 2008, our first ride will be Monday, May 5th. The season will run until the last Monday in September.

What type of bike is necessary?

A mountain bike is an absolute must. A few guidelines will help you determine if you have the correct bike. Your bike should have:
(not all mandatory, but recommended)
Generally if you've purchased your bike at a local Independent Bike Retailer (Liberty!, Bike-Fit, Rapid City Cycle, Clarksons, Thorntons, etc.) you should be OK. If your bike was purchased at Canadian Tire, Wal-mart or Sport Chek, it may not last the season or be sturdy enough for the trails.

Where do you ride and how often?

We ride on the 12-mile creek trails, Glenridge "dump" trails, Short Hills Provincial Park and the trails around Brock University. We meet each Monday at the Regional Municipality Buildings across from Brock University around 5:45pm and start our rides at 6:00pm. We generally ride until 8:00pm.

How large is the group?

In the last year the group has grown from 15 to 30 then to 45. In 2008 we hope to have even more! We separate everyone each week into 3 or 4 age and ability based groups. The groups are usually around 10 kids and 3-4 adults large.

Do you have early events or trips?

We don't have any regularly scheduled yearly events. Some groups of kids have gone to Kelso or Hardwood Hills together, but as of now, we do not have any scheduled trips.

We do have monthly races. We meet at a different location the last Monday of the month and have a race for the Youth MTB. It is timed and awards are given out. We also have draw prizes that are generously donated by the local bike shops and their suppliers. There is no cost to these races!

Can parents join the rides too?

Absolutely, as long as mom/dad is a member of the SCCC too, we absolutely love having the parents ride too. Often parents have told us they enjoy the rides and learn more than their son/daughter.
