For those with some time on their hands i'd recommend getting in some training hours at the Forest City Velodrome. It's a bit of a hike, and there's some prep work, but when you get to the point where you can do the structured training drills, that's where there's some serious benefit.

The prep work involves attending Track 1, which is an intro to riding on the track, then some rec sessions where you just build up some hours (8 - 10 hours is good), then Track 2 which basically confirms you know what you're doing on the track.

Then you are qualified to participate in the more advanced skills and drills, and the structured training. Wednesday nights you can do the rec ride from 5 - 7, and then there is structured training from 7 - 9 run by Rob Good. In those 4 hours you'll get some serious efforts, basically as many as you can handle. It usually starts with a 80 or 120 lap rollup, then last night we did pursuits (1 - 4 lap efforts where you lap the field), sprints, and at the end some madison training. I challenge anyone to get that kind of training at this time of year anywhere else around here.

One of the neat parts of all of these sessions is that you can drop out at any time, recover, go to the washroom, whatever, and then hop back in when you are ready or when it's appropriate. It's not like the club group rides where if you get dropped say way back in Canboro, that you have to ride the next 15km on your own (this happened to a friend of mine, not me...).

Just another option to consider.
