This was the first world cup for most of the Canadian team, myself included. My racing began on Friday, where I competed in the individual sprints, along with fellow Canadian Travis Smith. I managed to qualify with a time of 10.5, which put me in 10th place. In the 1/8 finals, I was up against a French rider, who had won the kilo and keirin the night before. I knew I had to keep the race short against a rider like that. I controlled the race from the beginning, and as he tried to jump over me, I accelerated, and kept him stuck on my hip. He pulled up, and this time with more height tried accelerating past me again. Again I almost kept him stuck on my hip, but he managed to get by and win the race. This left me in 13th place at the end of the day. Saturday was the team sprint, where I was the first rider, followed by Travis Smith and Stephane Cossette. We managed to set a new Canadian record with a time of 45.3 in our qualifying round, which left us in 3rd place. This put us in the Bronze medal round against the Ukrainian team. The Canadian team went almost the exact same time as the first round, but the Ukrainians went two tenths faster, and pushed us out of a podium spot. It was quite an experience, and I learned a lot. I'm really looking forward to the Beijing World Cup coming up in January. A big thanks to the StCCC for their continuing support! |
