Ian Young Posts Best Time at SCCC Training Event on Provincial Time Trial Course
Posted: September 4, 2006
The St. Catharines Cycling Club hosted a training event on the Wellandport OCA Provincial Time Trial course on August 27. Wet roads and light drizzle prevailed during the day. It did not stop those eager to test their strength in preparation for the championship event to be held on September 9, 2006.

This flat and fast 40 Km course along the south side of the Welland River was recently paved and has bike lanes in both directions.

Ian Young finished first in an impressive 52 minutes and 24 seconds. Just 3 seconds behind him was Michael Moore in 52:27. Michael was the silver medalist in the Open Senior category of the 2005 Ontario Provincial ITT Championship event. He was Master A National Champion in the ITT a few years ago and manages Team R.A.C.E., one of the top road racing teams in Canada. David Jack took third place with a time of 53 minutes and 27 seconds.

Asked how he felt about his performance, Ian remarked that this was his first time to race the 40Km distance so he didn’t know what to expect. He has spent the last year concentrating on the 112-mile Ironman Triathlon distance. He completed his first Ironman in Lake Placid in July, placing 23/156 in the 25-29 age group. “I was hoping to be around 55 or 56 minutes so I was pleased with the result of 52 and change.” “At this point in the season it’s fun to test myself with the shorter, more intense rides.”

David Jack has an impressive list of wins as a track racer and time trialist. Most recently, he came home from the 2006 Canadian Masters Track Championships with five medals and took first place at the 2006 Peterborough 40Km ITT for the Master B event.

Asked about his performance, David replied “My time was good for my effort. I made the mistake of going too hard in the practice races last year and didn’t have much mentally to push myself for the Championship so I only gave it about 80% on the 27th.”

David also took time to thank the St. Catharines Cycling Club event promoters. “My hat goes off to the timers (Jimmy Grieg, Don Smith, Rick Jackson, Glauco) and course marshals (Norm Young) at the race. It’s always the worst for the volunteers when it rains.” We all appreciate their efforts.
