2006 Hill Climb Championships

A total of 13 brave riders faced some challenging conditions today in competing for bragging rights for the Hill Climb and Downhill Championships. Showers, strong NW winds and cool temperatures were thrown at the riders, but these conditions didn’t stop some impressive performances during the event.
For this year’s Hill Climb championships, two changes were made in the initial two climbs. The first climb up Ninth Ave Louth was changed to lengthen the distance by starting on 11th Ave Louth, just north of Ellis Avenue. The added distance was just enough to warm up the legs prior to the assault up the climb on Ninth. For the second climb, the riders were faced with a slippery ascent up Sulfur Springs Road and then a hard left onto Roland Road, up a short, steep, leaf covered climb, finishing by the Shorts Hills Park entrance. The final climb was the classic haul up Effingham Road from the old Ice Cream store to the top of Saylor’s Hill.
Results from the climbs are:

After the lung burning climbs, it was the chance for the descenders to show their stuff in the annual Carl Vandersanden Memorial Downhill Championships. The stiff NW wind that helped push the riders up Saylor’s Hill was still blowing, this time in their faces down the hill. These conditions made for some slightly slower times this year, plus some tense moments for the riders on the flatter parts of the descent as speeds dropped quickly during the strong wind gusts. Despite these conditions, times were close for the top riders. Results are:

Rider’s Name Effingham Road
Jeff Poulsen 3:22
Justin Hines 3:22
Arnold Goertzen 3:23
Wes Stephenson 3:23
Kent Keeler 3:23
Andrew Hunt 3:24
Dave Vandelaar 3:26
Brian Ciazynski 3:28
Norm Gervais 3:35
Frank Vassallo 3:40
Terri Gregotski 3:50
Trevor Dicksenson 3:56
Matt Laing 4:20
