Top Cyclists Honoured at 2006 Awards Banquet
Posted: November 19, 2006
The hardware lineup was impressive. Twelve full-size trophies with the winner’s name and the date engraved on rows of plaques along the base of each trophy. Even more impressive were the St. Catharines Cycling legends reviewing the trophies: Peter Junek, Steve Bauer, Amy Moore, Dan and Tim Lefebvre. The 2006 names were masked out with a bit of tape, to be unveiled during the official awards ceremony.
The 2006 St. Catharines Cycling Club Awards Banquet was held at a most fitting location, the Sawmill Golf and Country Club on the Sawmill leg of our Thursday-evening time trials. Eighty-five members and guests flowed into the expansive dining room with an array of prizes for the Chinese auction held later in the evening. Friends caught up with friends at the bar while the juniors were tasked with selling tickets for the auction.
As we sat down for dinner, we were informed to check under our coffee cups. Roundpetal Wines had donated a case of XOXO to the Club for the event. At each table, the person who found a sticker on the bottom of his or her coffee cup would take home a bottle of wine.
As we were finishing the hearty roast beef dinner, Rick Clift introduced our guest speaker, Amy Moore. Amy was selected to race on T-Mobile’s inaugural 2006 women’s team. Amy delighted us with stories of how many years ago she rode her “50-pound mountain bike to the Fonthill Velodrome” and was awed by what she saw. She swam at Brock University, rowed for the Winston Churchill team, and at university became a triathlete. She specialized in cycling and ended up on the Canadian national team.
We learned about her full recovery from a 2001 road accident when she was hit by a car, and her grueling, yet exhilarating experience racing in the Women’s Tour de France as an alternate. Her ultimate cycling experience was racing for T-Mobile in Germany. Asked about her season, she relied, “It was an amazing experience. Everyone in Europe is so supportive of cycling. There are so many races and you learn so much about yourself.”
Rick Clift, Club Treasurer, assisted by Don Smith, President, presented the awards.

Joe Veloce with cycling legends Dan Lefebvre, Steve Bauer and Peter Junek
Tim Lefebvre presented the Corporate Lake-to-Lake trophy to the St. Catharines Cycling Team.
Half Wheeler Award: Rick Clift
Fred Dent-in-the-Head Award: Tim Lefebvre
For those who had been in crashes this year, both serious and silly, the Fred Dent-in-the-Head award went to Tim Lefebvre for his scooter accident at the Tour of Bermuda. Tim hit a downed power line that flipped up and caught him in the throat, flattening him on the road but not seriously injuring him. He admitted sheepishly that a hurricane had been severe enough to cancel the last two days of the stage race and a lot of the roads were out. In spite of his helmet, it was not a good day to be on a scooter.
To this list of award winners we must add the Walter Lavell Cup Old School Classic Time Trial awarded in July to Valerie Sparrow and Nathan Chown. Shane Lavell donated his grandfather’s 1902 trophy for this inaugural event.
Rick presented Don Smith with a plaque recognizing his many contributions to the Club.

The endless rounds of heartfelt applause expressed congratulations to the award winners for their hard and successful efforts, both on the bike and in support of the Club.
